The National Monument, or "Monas" as it is popularly called, is one of the monuments built during the Sukarno era of fierce nationalism. The top of the National Monument (Monas) is Freedom Square. It stands for the people's determination to achieve freedom and the crowning of their efforts in the Proclamation of Independence in August 1945. The 137-meter tall marble obelisk is topped with a flame coated with 35 kg of gold. The base houses a historical museum and a hall for meditations. The monument is open to the public and upon request the lift can carry visitors to the top, which offers a bird's eye view on the city and the sea.
Go early to beat the crowds and the haze. It is easy for the less physically able as lifts take visitors to the top. The diorama exhibition in the basement gives such a distorted view of Indonesian history.
This imposing obelisk is Jakarta's most famous landmark. Construction started in 1961 under President Soekarno but was not completed until 1975, under President Soeharto. Great Mosque of Demak
The Demak Mosque is one of the most famous mosques in Indonesia because it has historical and religious values. In the Dynamics of Islam in the Archipelago by Ahmad Zuhdi, et al. explained that the Demak Mosque is one of the oldest and first mosques in Java. The mosque, which is located in Demak City, Central Java, was built during the reign of Raden Patah in the 15th century. Even though this mosque is hundreds of years old, the beauty and majesty of the building is still very visible today.
Although the time of completion of its construction is difficult to accept logically, all historical records tell the same thing. This is a miracle and uniqueness for the Demak Mosque which was only built in one night. However, if it is related to the supernatural powers of ancient people, especially the saints, the construction of a mosque which only took one night could indeed happen.
Fairuz Sabiq in the book Sunan Kalijaga and the Mitos of the Great Mosque of Demak explained that in historical records, the mosque is a place that has an important role in the spread and development of Islam in Java. The Demak Mosque was originally built to meet the needs of the Muslim community in Demak, who at that time were still limited in finding places of worship.
The location of the Demak mosque which is placed around the square and the palace shows a manifestation of the gathering of scholars, people and leaders. While the architecture of the mosque is a manifestation of the unification of religion with culture and as a public attraction. The layout of the Demak Mosque was then followed by other grand mosques under the auspices of the sultanate or Islamic empire in Java. Not only that, the architecture of the Great Mosque of Demak was also used as a reference for later mosques until the 17th century AD.
The Demak Mosque has several uniqueness that make it a popular historical tourist attraction. One of the uniqueness lies in the architecture of the building which is very beautiful and stunning.
Still in the same source, the architecture of the Demak Mosque is in the form of joglo construction on the main building using an odd number of overlapping shingle roofs and a tajug shape.
In the book History of Wali Songo by Zulham Farobi it is revealed that in fact the triple roof model at the Demak mosque means that a believer needs to climb three important levels in his religion, namely faith, Islam and ihsan.
Apart from that, inside the mosque there is also a wooden pulpit which is very beautiful and is one of the oldest in Indonesia. This wooden pulpit is made of teak wood and has very fine and beautiful carved ornaments.
The Demak Mosque was also the center of Islamic civilization in Indonesia in its time. Therefore, many people come to this mosque to deepen their religious knowledge and learn from the scholars who are there. Inside the mosque there are also the tombs of respected religious figures, such as Sunan Kalijaga and Sunan Muria so that people often come to visit as well for pilgrimages.
